Founded in 1973, BCI is one of the leading chemical companies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and is located in the eastern province of the Kingdom. The company’s headquarters and manufacturing plant and storage facilities are on its own 200,000 square meters site near Dammam’s first industrial city.
For more than 40 years BCI, a 100% Saudi joint stock company, has supported Saudi industrial and consumer markets by providing high quality chemical products. From the outset, the company’s expansion and innovation programmes have had a continuous process of adopting the latest methods of research and production, this approach has helped BCI maintain its position as the leader in its field.
When BCI started commercial production in 1975, demand quickly outstripped the supply and in just two years the capacity was doubled.
In 1983 Mercury technology was supplemented with a new plant four times the original capacity using the new state-of-the-art Membrane technology. Being only the sixth company in the world to use this advanced pollution-free technology, the process also ensures extremely high quality and pure end products. In 1993 the plant was revamped and the capacity of the Membrane plant was increased by 1.5 times.
In 2005 BCI commissioned its third plant and this again was based on the latest Membrane technology, along with Uhdenora, Italy a joint venture between “Krupp Uhde of Dortmund, Germany” and “Industries De Nora of Milano, Italy”. Both European companies have vast experience in the field of chlorine manufacturing and joined together to present the best Membrane “electrolysis technology” as UHDENORA, Italy “Membrane Electrolysis Technology”.
The plant is fully automatic and uses a DCS system, which delivers precision control of the process parameters to achieve the best quality products in a highly efficient manner.
The start of this third plant gave BCI more than double its existing capacity. This allowed the company to close down its (Plant – I) Mercury cell operations which brought it one step ahead in Environmental Protection.
As with BCI’s other manufacturing facilities, its Chlor Alkali plant is operated according to stringent international safety and quality control standards.
In fact, BCI was one of a few companies in the Kingdom to achieve the ISO 9000 certification in 1994 by SGS Yarsley, for the manufacture, sale and distribution of Caustic Soda, Chlorine, Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Hypochlorite along with the certification of quality control and safety as required in the production of these chemicals. In addition to ISO 9001:2008 BCI achieved and maintains ISO 14000:2004, OSHAS 18001:2007 certifications from Lloyd’s Register.
BCI produces all grades of Caustic Soda, Hydrochloric Acid, Chlorine and Sodium Hypo Chlorite.
In step with the expanding requirements of the Saudi Arabian industrial sector, BCI’s activities are aimed at developing and manufacturing the following ranges of products, many of which it has introduced.
